Job Responsibilities

 

 

Golder Associates Ltd. is seeking an intermediate-level Geotechnical Field Technician/ Technologist to join their Construction Services and Materials Engineering Group as part of their Greater Golden Horseshoe Operations, in our Barrie and St. Catharines locations.  The Field Technician/Technologist will focus on technical assistance in construction and materials related projects and tasks including carrying out site reconnaissance, field investigations and assisting with the preparation of technical reports. They will interact with Golder staff including field technicians and technologists, administrative and professional staff as well as some clients.

Job Responsibilities       

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  • Testing

 

  • Carrying out fieldwork, for subsurface investigations including layout, supervising drill rigs and/or excavators, logging boreholes and test pits, site surveying to determine elevations at specific locations using GPS equipment, sampling soil and groundwater, and detailed site sketches;
  • Using specialized equipment and apparatus to prepare analyses, reports and/or technical drawings; and
  • Summarizing and analyzing findings from investigations and lab testing for report writing.
  • Reporting
    • Entering test data and producing standard test reports.
  • Mentoring and Training;

 

 

  • Responsible to provide mentoring and training to junior staff.
  • Materials Handling
    • Logging and handling of test samples.
  • Field Coordination;

 

 

  • Responsible to schedule all field staff for their daily activities.
  • Health and Safety

 

  • Ensuring proper care, handling, and storage of test samples and various chemical products used in laboratory testing;
  • Following Health and Safety responsibilities, under all applicable government legislations and Golder policies and procedures; and
  • Demonstrating a “Safety First” focus and acts as a role model to other staff.

While the primary focus will be on construction and materials projects related to the transportation sector within the GTA, opportunities will exist to work with other groups within this multidisciplinary office, as well as other Golder offices in Ontario and elsewhere.

 

Job Requirements

 

To be successful in this role, you will have the following qualifications:

  • Civil/Geotechnical Engineering Technician/Technologist Diploma or Degree;
  • 5 – 7 years previous experience (an ASSET) working as a field Technician or Technologist;
  • Certified Engineering Technician/Technologist (C.E.T.);
  • Familiarity with American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) and Ontario Provincial Standards and Specifications (OPSS) test procedures and requirements, and local municipal standards and specifications;
  • CCIL Certification;
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certification;
  • Strong knowledge of concrete, materials and asphalt is an asset;
  • Ability to use a variety of field equipment such as concrete coring equipment, load testing cells, reinforcing steel locator, FWD
  • Willingness to travel short term to complete out of town field investigations;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer usage;
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written);
  • Strong people skills and an ability to work in a team environment;
  • Strong team player – ability to work within all levels of an organization;
  • Detail oriented with emphasis on safety and quality of work;
  • Access to a reliable vehicle and must possess a valid driver’s licence;
  • Demonstrating a “Safety-First” focus and acting as a role model to other staff; and
  • Maintaining a high standard of behaviour to uphold Golder’s reputation and demonstrating a commitment to our Core Values.

 

Location Information

The St. Catherine’s and Barrie offices locations are part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) / Greater Golder Horseshoe (GGH) Operations that currently provides services locally, nationally and internationally in various client sectors. Currently, our local services include: Geotechnical, Materials Testing, Environmental Due Diligence, Environmental Health & Safety, Pavement Management, Waste and Hydrogeology.
