Job Responsibilities

The Golder Associates Fort McMurray Office is seeking a Junior Physical Hydrogeologist to fulfill a six-month contract position to assist the needs of the Hydrogeology Team, based in Calgary. The successful candidate will support project managers with a variety of duties in the areas of physical hydrogeology, which may involve: field work and office support in the areas of data entry and field planning/preparation.

The position is a six (6) month contract position and there may be an opportunity for contract extension pending available work.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Take part in field work covering a broad range of technical services in the field of hydrogeology, including involvement in the groundwater component of Environmental Impact Assessments for the oil sands industry; baseline hydrogeological studies, mine dewatering projects and groundwater supply development;
  • Field work is associated with hydrogeological projects, including groundwater investigations, groundwater sampling, pumping tests, drilling, design, installation and testing of supply and site characterization/investigations;
  • Willingness to travel and participate in remote field work, primarily within western and northern Canada and ability to adapt to unpredictable and/or inclement field conditions and changing schedules;
  • Work as crew leader for planning, logistics, and equipment calibration;
  • Responsible for personal and team safety during field operations;
  • Data entry of field data collection;
  • Solid organizational skills (prioritizing, time management, record keeping, follow up, tracking);
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle (if hired, a driver’s abstract is required);
  • Able to develop positive working relationships in a team environment;
  • Understand, follow and participate in Golder's health and safety programs;
  • Quantitative skills, resourcefulness, attention to detail; and
  • Have an understanding of the principles of hydrogeology.

Job Requirements

The preferred candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • A technical Diploma in environmental science or equivalent from an accredited college or university, or a University degree in Science;
  • Minimum 1 year relevant experience;
  • Understanding of basic water sampling techniques;

 

While not required, experience with any of the following would be considered a strong asset:

  • Experience operating ATV, UTV, snowmobiles, and ARGOs;
  • Experience with groundwater well drilling, testing and groundwater sampling;
  • Experience with databases, assessing and QA/QC checks of water quality data; and
  • Familiarity with the regulatory environment in Alberta.
