Job Responsibilities


The Whitby office has openings for Laboratory Technicians. Working as a member of the Laboratory Service Group, the successful candidates will work closely with other team members, as well as with Geotechnical Consultants and Field Technicians.  


The responsibilities of the Laboratory Technicians may include, but not be limited to:


  • Carrying out laboratory tests on soils, aggregates, concrete and other construction materials to various industry standards.  Please note that samples can weigh up to 50lb.  The successful candidate must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs;
  • Entering test data and produce standard test reports;
  • Shipping, receiving, logging, handling, storage of and disposal of samples;
  • Cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and calibration of laboratory testing equipment; 
  • Assisting with ordering and re-supply of  laboratory and field supplies;
  • General laboratory cleaning and maintenance duties as required;
  • Proper care, handling, and storage of various chemical products used in laboratory testing; and,
  • Interacting with staff in the Whitby office including field technicians and technologists, administrative and professional staff, as well as with some clients.


Job Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Technician or Technology diploma in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering;
  • Ability to learn, comprehend, and to accurately and conscientiously perform standard test procedures in accordance with applicable standards;
  • Appropriate ethical standards to maintain the reputation of  the company and of the laboratory;
  • Previous knowledge of the various ASTM, MTO and CSA test methods and protocols for soil, aggregate, asphaltic concrete and Portland cement concrete would be an asset;
  • Ability to learn various calculation and reporting software;
  • The successful candidate must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs;
  • Safety oriented attitude; first aid and WHMIS training an asset;
  • Good time management skills;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Flexible attitude with the ability to work overtime and/or weekends as required; and,
  • Ability to work in a team environment


Additional Information

The Whitby Laboratory is the largest construction materials testing facility within Golder Associates operations in North America. Tests carried out at this location include advanced physical properties testing on soils, aggregates, hot mix asphalt, asphalt cements, concrete, masonry and other related materials.  The laboratory has over 4000 square feet of dedicated laboratory space and employs in excess of 15 staff members consisting of engineers, technicians and administrative staff.
